Today’s substack will be brief. TLDR: the last few weeks have been incredibly hard work-wise.
Last week, I found out that the show I met on was going to have a very small room. The showrunner was very kind but couldn’t bring me on. This was hard to hear. I know, please play the world’s tiniest violin. Getting any staffing meeting in this climate is a miracle. Staffing meetings are fucking hard if you’re a mid-level writer (ML) and lower-level (LL) because a lot of upper-level (UL) writers are working at scale/union minimum, i.e. making what a lower-level writer would make. So why hire a ML or LL when you can hire an UL at the same price. I’ve spoken to other friends at similar levels and the same has happened to them. The showrunner thinks they can hire at their level but once deals are closed at the upper-level, oftentimes, there isn’t money left to hire a mid-level or lower-level writer. It seems like there is a ton of staffing happening right now but mostly for upper-level writers.
